Trainee - Audit and Assurance
After completing my undergraduate degree in Geography and working for a year in a management role in a high street retailer, I decided to study a Masters in Management at Queens University Belfast. It was during my time here that I took a module in finance and accounting and realised the career path I wanted to pursue. It was in the local newspaper that I came across an exciting opportunity to join a new audit and advisory mobility team starting in Grant Thornton and I couldn’t wait to apply.
I started with Grant Thornton in September 2016 and immediately began working on numerous jobs for the audit, forensics and corporate finance teams. A few months on I realised that Audit was the area for me and applied to permanently transfer. Since then I have been exposed to a wide range of audit and accounts preparation jobs for national, local, private and public sector companies. Getting the opportunities to work alongside senior managers and partners is what makes Grant Thornton stand out for me and has helped in my professional development.
Nearly a year into the graduate program and I have successfully completed my first block of exams. The support and guidance you receive from managers and your colleagues throughout exam time, along with the hands on experience throughout the year really helps to make studying that bit easier.
We also have a great social and sports calendar at Grant Thornton, from the GT Bake Off, Pay Day pizza and beers and our annual Corporate Social Responsibility day there is always something going on to have a little fun. During the spring, GT entered a team into a local Tag Rugby league which was a great opportunity for me to bond with fellow colleagues and get to know people outside my department.
I am really looking forward to continuing my journey on the Grant Thornton Graduate Program and couldn’t have asked for a better start to my career.
