Associate - Audit

I studied MEng Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cambridge. As part of my degree, I took an accountancy option module in my final year and loved it. This gave me the incentive to explore the available job opportunities and I decided to apply for audit positions.

Throughout my training contract, I have found my degree to be useful especially when working on construction clients as I am familiar with the industry. This allows me to understand how the business works as well as the financial aspects when completing the audit. I have also been given the opportunity to act as the auditor in charge of a motor retail group, which was a great experience.

Recently I had the opportunity to work in our personal tax department. I found this to be very beneficial as it allowed me to apply the technical skills I had learned in class to practical situations in the workplace. Soon, I will be moving to our corporate tax department, so I can gain experience in this area also.

Last year, I organised a team from the office to climb Slieve Donard to raise money for Action Cancer. This was a fantastic experience and we raised a good amount for a local charity. It helped to promote our commitment to fundraising in the office and was also a great team building opportunity.

As a graduate coming into Grant Thornton, you are provided with the opportunity to take responsibility for jobs early in your career. While this can be a steep learning curve, it provided me with invaluable experience which allowed me to fully understand the audit process.
