Lauren Turkington tells us about her time working in tax at Grant Thornton.

I joined Grant Thornton in August 2020. In just over two years, I have watched myself become a confident professional who genuinely enjoys her role. Grant Thornton are an incredibly supportive firm – supportive in my studies and supportive in my personal life as I pursue a training contract with a young child. They allow for flexible working for example if there are any days where I need to work from home or if I need manoeuvre my time around taking my daughter to school or an appointment.

I joined the Private Client Tax department and immediately had exposure to client work. Albeit this exposure was initially indirect, after my first year I was allocated my own client portfolio and had the opportunity to build relationships with them directly. I love that my clients have the confidence in me to call or email with any queries they have and enjoy the fact that every day brings exposure to different work.

During my time at Grant Thornton, I have worked on a variety of taxes (mainly income tax and capital gains tax) however I have begun to specialise in inheritance tax on estates and trusts. I am enjoying the transition of my role as it provides more opportunity for learning. In terms of my professional studies, I chose to pursue the ATT-CTA route and have already attained my ATT qualification. I will be sitting my final CTA exams across November 2022 and May 2023.  The firm is especially supportive regarding exams and provides study leave along with revision classes, and a staff-led class which will focus on the CTA case study paper’s pre-seen information.

Aside from exams and client work, Grant Thornton is a social firm and will host multiple events throughout the year: Last Christmas we made wreaths in the office, at Easter there was an office egg hunt, we hosted our first Gay Pride party in the Belfast office this year and most recently we had our Corporate Social Responsibility day in September where we provided donations to our local communities then we went on a treasure hunt around Belfast. Basically if there is an opportunity for an activity, Grant Thornton love to get involved!
