In a pivotal period for our local Food and Beverage industry, Charlie Kerlin at Grant Thornton conducted an interview with John Hood, Head of Food and Tourism at Invest NI. Our local economic development agency will have a critical role to play over the next few years in proactively assisting our local companies navigate the outcomes of Brexit. Currently John Hood’s team look after over 200 companies in our largest manufacturing sector.

Discounters achieve largest ever share of UK Grocery retail market
The recent Kantar Worldpanel market statistics in January showed the further rise of the Discounter’s share of the UK grocery retail wallet. Aldi and Lidl achieved a combined market share of 12.8% over the important Christmas period. Consumers have and continue to be price savvy which increased the pressure on retailers to demonstrate strong value for money offers. This in turn impacts our local producers who need to focus on remaining relevant through innovation and cost competitiveness.

Important Meat market opens for Northern Ireland processors
DEFRA announced last month that Japan has lifted its 2 decade ban on beef and lamb export from the UK market. Export potential for the UK is estimated at £25m+ per annum.
Whilst one door opens the potential of a “No deal” Brexit could see it slammed shut. In the last few days it is reported that Japan is stalling on its Free Trade talks with the EU given the potential, it believes to secure greater concessions from the UK post Brexit.
